Shadowhunter Style: S1:E10 “This World Inverted”

Shadowhunter Sty;e

On this week’s Shadowhunters, Clary jumped through a seelie portal in order to find Valentine, and she ended up in alternate universe where shadowhunters didn’t exist, Izzy was a nerd, Alec was cool, and Jace was a barista. Meanwhile, in the real world, Izzy was arrested for treason, driving Alec to take some seriously dangerous risks in order to save her.

The alternate reality concept allows the show’s wardrobe department to really play with characters’ outfits in this episode. They utilize pops of color, soft fabrics and flawy cuts to create a world that sharply contrasts with all the leather, skintight pieces, and heavy dark colors we’ve come to expect from Shadowhunters. The result is a reimagining of our favorite characters and

Here are the must-have looks you need to have in your closet from this week’s episode.

Clary

Look 1

Desperate to do follow any lead that will help her locate Valentine, Clary leaps head first into a portal taking on her very first solo mission as a shadowhunter. She’s ready to get down to business in outfit that won’t slow her down. Get her take on the shadowhunter uniform by pairing a v-neck tee in a rich oxblood with a pair of black skinny jeans and a sexy leather jacket. Complete your look with some studded black booties, a purple crystal necklace, a studded leather wrap bracelet, and a practical yet stylish messenger bag.

Look 2

When Clary lands on the other side of the portal, she’s transported into a world where her parents are together, Jace is her steady boyfriend, and demons no longer pose a threat to humanity. She also gets back a version of her pre-shadowhunter closet. Get this little throwback to Clary’s past life by pairing a flowy striped tank with grey jeans and distressed grey booties. Finish it off with a collection of multicolored bangles and a purple crystal necklace.

Look 3

While in the portal-verse, Clary’s mission gets a little sidetracked when she’s thrust into an over-the-top Alice in Wonderland themed gala planned by alternate universe Alec. With Jace on her arm, she steps out in style that’s more her old self than her current one. To get her party look, pair a vintage-inspired dressing a pretty purple with a pair of lacy black embellished pumps. A purple crystal pendant, a set of thin gold bangles, and a collection of dainty gold rings add the final touch to this simply sweet look.

Isabelle

Look 1

Isabelle may be a prisoner of the Clave, but that doesn’t mean our girl is going down without a fight or looking like a hot mess. She’s still looking fierce despite being confined. Recreate Izzy too-cool-to-care look by combining a sexy black peplum top with black skinny jeans and knee-high black heeled boots. A geometric cocktail ring adds some edge. Of course, this wouldn’t be complete without her signature snake bracelet and ruby red crystal pendant.

Look 2

When Clary meets alternate universe Izzy, she barely recognizes her. Not that you can blame her. Unlike the sexy and confident girl in the real world, this version of Izzy is just your regular laid-back shy girl who wears glasses and shares earbuds with her boyfriend. Get her geek-chic style by pairing a some basic blue jeans and a graphic tee, like the Star Wars one she wore in the episode, with a pair of brown lace-up boots. Finish your look with an assortment of string and wrap bracelets on your arm and a flannel shirt tied around your waist.

Look 3

Izzy is always the life of the party, but, in portal world, her usual party look gets a major overhaul. She’s traded in her usual something black and leather that shows more skin than it covers something soft and sweet. Get her portal party look with an classically cut embellished dress in a beautiful blue hue. A pair of glittery silver heels and a rhinestone studded headband add some sparkle while simple silver bangles and chandelier earrings with a hint of blue tie everything together.

Shadowhunter Style: S1:E5 “Moo Shu to Go”

Shadowhunter Sty;e

On this week’s episode of Shadowhunters, the gang faces a pack of angry werewolves after Clary gets kidnapped on Alec’s watch, Luke proves his loyalty to Clary, and Alec and Isabelle’s mother Mayrse returns to the New York Institute.

While she embraced adoptive son Jace with open arms, Mayrse’s reunion with her biological children was less than warm, especially with Isabelle. From their first lines, it’s clear that mother and daughter have their issues. These two women couldn’t be anymore different than night and day in both their actions and their personal styles. They may both wear black dresses in this episode, but the dresses themselves and the way they are styles are two completely different looks. (Both ladies do love a bold red lip though. Maybe there is hope.)

Isabelle’s Look

Mayrse may disapprove of her daughter’s vamped up look, but Isabelle doesn’t let that distain for her appearance force her into conforming to her mother’s more conservative ways. She puts her own sexy spin on the classic LBD, and now you can too. Start with a sleeveless black dress that has a zip-up front and layer a sexy lace bralette underneath. Slide the zipper down just far enough, the bralette peeks out. Pull on a pair of thigh-high boots, and finish the look off with a bold ring, a red stone pendant and a snake cuff bracelet. Isabelle would totally approve.

Mayrse’s Look

Unlike her daughter’s wild child ways, Mayrse is much more conservative in both her actions and her personal style. She is a woman who truly believes appearances are everything, and the most important thing is how her family is looked upon by the Clave. Get her sleek business look by pairing a sleeveless, modestly cut, textured black dress with a peplum blazer and and simple pumps. Use an embellished belt to chinch the blazer at the waist to create an hourglass silhouette. Finish the look off with a stretchy gray stone bracelet, dainty stacked rings, and some simple stud earrings. The only thing missing is Mayrse’s don’t-mess-with-me attitude.

Lethal Looks: Style Inspired by “How to Get Away with Murder”

How To Get Away With Murder (Image)

Whether they’re defending their clients or committing crimes, the ladies of How to Get Away with Murder always know how to look good even while getting their hands dirty. The show’s costume designer Linda Bass is a pro at selecting pieces that not only look stunning on camera, but also show how the characters are struggling to keep their perfectly crafted personas from falling apart. Just take a look a the scene where tough-as-nails Annalise sits at her vanity and methodically removes her wig and all of her makeup to reveal the vulnerability hidden underneath, or how Michaela completely freaks out when she realizes her engagement ring, the physical tie to her future as a senator’s wife, has fallen off her hand. The women of How to Get Away with Murder wear their wardrobes like warpaint and wield their accessories like weapons, and, with all of the revelations in the season finale, I’m excited to see how the show uses style to reflect the ebb and flow of character development in the upcoming season.

So for my fellow How to Get Away with Murder fans, here are five looks inspired our five favorite complex leading ladies.

1. Michaela Pratt

Type-A to the extreme and wound way too tight, any little threat to Michaela’s perfectly crafted future is enough to send her into an emotional tailspin. Taking cues from women like Jackie O., she’s meticulously honed her image as the future senator’s wife with classically tailored dresses in bold colors paired with neutral cardigans and blazers and simple, feminine accessories.

Michaela Pratt Style 2. Laurel Castillo

Laurel is that quiet girl in the back who flies under your radar until she solves the puzzle faster than everyone else in the room. Her mix of Ralph Lauren prep and tomboy chic is just classic enough to to blend in with her fellow law school classmates, but, with a couple subtly funky accessories to remind you she’s got a little edge working underneath.

Laurel Castillo Style 3. Annalise Keating

The first rule of How to Get Away with Murder: Do not cross Annalise. She can be your saving grace or your worst enemy, and, if you’re facing hard time, you definitely want her on your side. Sleek, sharp and sophisticated, she commands the courtroom in her perfectly tailored peplum tops, pencil skirts and dresses that she punches up with metallic jewelry and subtle pops of rich hues like oxblood.

Annalise Keating Style 4. Bonnie Winterbottom

Desperate to be part of the inner circle, Bonnie is forever trying to gain Annalise’s approval, but seems to fall short every time. While While she’s got a few secrets of her own, she maintains her mousy exterior with pastels and pearls.

Bonnie Winterbottom Style 5. Rebecca Sutter

The bad girl from the wrong side of the tracks, Rebecca’s rap sheet includes being accused of murder, dabbling in drugs and helping to cover up a crime scene. With a combination of ripped jeans, leather jackets, and studded jewelry, her look is as dangerous as her attitude.
