Shadowhunter Style: Recreating the Nyx Cosmetics “Mortal Instruments” Parallel Worlds Collection

parallel worlds TMI collection (Image)

Recently, I was cleaning out my makeup bag to throw out all my expired products when I stumbled across my Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Parallel Worlds collection from Nyx Cosmetics. (Being this set was released in 2013, you can see how long overdue this cosmetic cleansing was.) While I knew I needed to throw out the products as most were expired and mostly used up, I couldn’t help but feel a little saddened to let one of my favorite collections go into the trash and never using these products again. So, I decided to try and see if I could replicate my beloved collection with Nyx Cosmetics current line of products.

The original TMI Parallel Worlds collection included:

  • Smokey Shadow Eye Palette
  • Powder Blush in Pinched
  • Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cashmere
  • Soft Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul
  • Le Frou Frou Mascara
  • Studio Liquid Liner in Extreme Black

How did I do? I’m happy to report I didn’t do half bad. I was able to track down all of the original items in the collection. I also made a couple of my own tweaks to this recreation to really bring the unique styles of Clary and Izzy to life.

Let me start with the items I was able to find from the original Parallel Worlds Collection:

Smokey Shadow Palette

Jumbo Eye Pencil

cashmere nyx jumbo eye pencil (Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cashmere, $4.50, Nyx Cosmetics)

Soft Matte Lip Cream

Le Frou Frou Mascara

Studio Liquid Liner

Powder Blush

nyx pinched blush (Powder Blush in Pinched, $2.50, Nyx Cosmetics)

Unfortunately, while it is still available on the company’s sale page, it looks like Nyx Cosmetics is phasing out its Powder Blush, so this product won’t be available for much longer. They seem to have carried over many of their colors into their other products, but Pinched doesn’t appear to be among them. However, their High Definition Blush in Baby DollStudio Liquid Liner in Extreme Black, a shimmery light pink powder, is a great alternative the blush from the original Parallel Worlds collection.

While the Izzy-inspired look Nyx Cosmetics created for this collection has that sultry vibe we’ve come to expect from our favorite leading lady, I felt it was missing one key element: a sexy red lip like the ones she sports every week on Shadowhunters. The Soft Matte Lip Cream in Madrid, a luscious deep cranberry, is the perfect way to get Izzy’s signature red lips without breaking the bank.

Of course, all these products don’t really mean much without the knowing how to utilize them in order to create perfect looks inspired by Clary and Izzy. The final key component of really recreating all the elements of the Parallel Worlds Collection is find the tutorial sheet featuring Clary’s day look and Izzy’s night look. Here is the complete breakdown of everything you need to know to bring these looks to life.

Ireland may be known for its rolling green hills, beer and pub culture, but it’s quickly making a name for itself in the beauty industry worldwide. From homegrown brands to influencing collections of large cosmetic and skincare companies, we can’t get enough of its purifying muds, revitalizing seaweeds, and soothing countryside fragrances. Here are some great products that are bringing a little piece of the Emerald Isle across the pond fro the United States and straight into your beauty bag.

1. Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask and Cleanser Gel

The Irish Moor Mud collection from Peter Thomas Roth is my current skincare obsession. Made with 9,000 year-old mud harvested from the Irish country side, this duo decongests pores, refines and brightens, and leaves skin feeling smooth and revitalized.

There are several different fragrances in the Inis line, but Inis Moonlight is my personal favorite and current signature scent. Floral notes of peach and jasmine blend perfectly with earthy musk and orris for a versatile scent that works for both day and night.

September Reading List Day Five: “Brunette Ambition” by Lea Michele

Brunette Ambition (Image)

I absolutely love Lea Michele, and I could kick myself for not picking up her Brunette Ambition sooner. (It was one of those books I always meant to buy, but forgot to get every time I went to barnes and Noble.) Part memoir part lifestyle guide, this book gives a behind-the-scenes look into Michele’s career on broadway and her role as Rachel Berry on the hit television show Glee, as well as giving fans a glimpse into her personal life. She shares her favorite recipes, style and beauty tips, and workout moves in way that feels like you’re getting them from your best friend. She also pulls back the curtain on the struggles she faced, the life lessons she’s learned in the business, and the tragedies she’s experienced in her young life, including the death of her on-screen/off-screen boyfriend Cory Monteith. (Although she doesn’t go into too much depth on the topic, she peppers in subtle tributes to him.) Throughout the book, Michele encourages readers embrace what makes them unique, nourish themselves body and soul, and to persevere through struggles in order to get to where they want to be in life. Whether you’re a fan of Michele like me or not, Brunette Ambition is the perfect guide to help you achieve the best version of yourself.
