September Reading List Day Twelve: “Trust the Focus” by Megan Erickson

The first book in her Focus series, I discovered Trust the Focus by Megan Erickson while I was looking up authors that were going to be at a giant book signing I was attending in Philadelphia. (Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to check out the second book Focus on Me, but it’s at the top of my list.) A recent college grad struggling with his sexual orientation, Justin embarks on a cross-country road trip with his openly gay best friend Landry to scatter his father’s ashes at twelve of the places his father photographed before he died. As they mark places off of their lists, Justin finds it’s becoming harder to ignore that he’s love with his best friend. he and Landry find themselves on the cusp of starting a relationship, but Justin finds himself torn between what he wants and the future his conservative mother has planned out for him. Landry, who is dealing with a painful secret of his own, encourages him to be who he truly is, but he refuses to be treated like his dirty little secret. Battling between his head and his heart, Justin faces a tough choice: be true to himself or risk losing Landry forever. Emotionally raw and beautifully honest, Trust the Focus is a story about accepting who you are, taking a chance on love, and, ultimately, learning to trust in your focus.
