Looking for your next urban fantasy series? I highly recommend The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. Currently being adapted into a television series called Shadowhunters for ABC Family set to primer in January, the series centers around New York City teen Clary Fray, who discovers she is member of a half-human/half-angel race called shadowhunters tasked with protecting humans from the evil demons. When her mother is kidnapped by an evil shadowhunter named Valentine, she’s thrust into a world werwolves, vampires fairies and warlocks roam among the living and where a thousand year old war is being waged against evil. Aiding her in transition are her fellow shadowhunters the sarcastic and skilled Jace Wayland, the sexy and outspoken Isabelle Lightwood, and the quiet and brooding Alec Lightwood, as well as the flamboyant and witty warlock Magnus Bane. Clary falls hard for Jace, and the trials and tribulations of their relationship are one of the main storylines throughout the series. Clare does an amazing job of creating layered, complex characters that are relatable to readers and who you want to root for. While the bulk of the series is the war between good and evil, she weaves in issues that teens can relate to like first loves, struggles with parents, coming out, and the quest to figure out who one will become as an adult. Part reality part fantasy, The Mortal Instruments series is a journey into the “world within our own” that will captivate readers of any age.
