This week on Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll the doctor is in when the band signs up for sessions with a shrink.
Tired of the band’s constant feuding and fighting, Gigi enlists the assistance of renowned therapist that specializes in saving bands like Aerosmith and Kings of Leon. However, Johnny is reluctant to participate when the therapist turns out to be more new age the arm chair, leading the band to starting arguing over who is the cause of all their issues. The theripist suggests that the band is similar to a family dynamic and that they need to focus on communication and forgiveness in order to repair the frayed bonds. His philosophy is “a box of yesterday’s rain will heal today’s spiritual wound.”
The band starts on their shrink’s prescribed program. The first thing on the list is individual sessions in the studio. However, most of the band doesn’t seem to understand the process. Ava grills the doctor for dish on Steven Tyler, Flash tries to get validation that he looks thirty, and Rehab expounds some spiritual thoughts as a poly to get a few herbal prescriptions. After proving he’s an ego maniac by wearing a t-shirt with his face on it, Johnny briefly discusses his Jonah complex before he decides to use the rest of his session to take a nap. Only Bam Bam, who has some father issues and Gigi, admits to playing the tough girl to hide her insecurities, are the only ones who take the program seriously. The therapist then introduces a few group exercises The first one involves passing eggs in a circle, but an argument over the differences in their eggs causes them to break them all before they can even start. The second one allows Ava, Bam Bam and Rehab, the less powerful band members a chance to express themselves through music with no interruptions. Bam Bam gets out his daddy issues, Ava plays a ukulele on roller skates, and Rehab stares at his bandmates while giving a chaotic bass performance.
During their final session, the therapist opens the floor to anyones who wants to say something. Of course, the discussion of adding a ukulele and if drum songs exist dissolves into chaos after Johnny apologizes for sleeping with Flash’s wife. Fed up, Ava steps up and lays down the law. The band isn’t a democracy. It’s a dictatorship where never-ending struggle breeds musical magic, and there is a new dictator in town: Queen Gigi. Bam Bam tries to refocus the group by praising the doctor’s no sugar, no carbs diet, but he’s busted when the pizza boy shows up for him. The doctor snaps and storms out, declaring them the most messed up band in the history of rock and roll, leaving them to celebrate their historic status. Gigi and Johnny decide that, while they are nowhere near perfect, the band is their family, and they join the others in the studio to lay down a new track.
