At 25 and out of college, I thought my days of dressing up for Halloween were long behind me. At this age, Halloween to me is horror movie marathons, handing candy out to kids on the block while sipping on hard cider, and the occasional ghost tour. (I love Halloween. Dressing up not so much.)
Then, I started working in an office and discovered that people still care about dressing up especially if there are contests and prizes involved.
Whether it’s over enthusiastic coworkers or a last minute party invite, it can be a pain to come up with a costume on the fly, especially if your like me and can’t justify buying a costume you’ll only wear once. Our only choice is to take a look at our wardrobe and create something with what we’ve got.
If you’re at a loss for inspiration and in serious costume crunch time, I’ve assembled a list of some of my favorite costume ideas you can pull of with items from your closet with little to no effort. Consider it my Halloween treat for you!
1. A from Pretty Little Liars
Low on time? There is no simpler costume than the elusive A from Pretty Little Lairs. Just throw on some dark jeans and boots, a black hoodie, and black gloves, and you’re good to go. Bonus points if you unleash your inner a A and leave cryptic messages with candy around for people to stumble upon. (Just don’t get caught.)
2. Badass YA Heroine
Are you an avid reader with a soft spot for a popular young adult series? Using dark jeans, a plain black top, boots and your favorite leather jacket as the base, choose the simple iconic elements of your favorite heroine to solidify which which series she’s from. Here are a few of my personal favorites.
Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games
All you need to do is give yourself a side braid and you’re done. If you want, you can add a mockingjay pin. Don’t have one? Tell people you have it hidden so the Capital won’t find it.
Tris Prior from Divergent
A ponytail and some temporary black bird tattoos on your collar bone and your Tris costume is complete.
Isabelle Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments
Okay, this one is the most complex of the three, but still pretty easy to pull off. Braid your hair, rock a necklace with a large red stone and snake bracelet, and recreate a few runes on visible areas of skin with an eyeliner pencil or crayon.
3. Abby Sciuto from NCIS
Everyone’s favorite punk rock lab tech is my costume for this year’s office party. Pair your favorite black tee with a plaid skirt or jeans and pair of combat boots. Pigtails, lots of gothic jewelry and a temporary spiderweb tattoo (I’m doing mine in eyeliner) on your neck complete the look. Take it over the top with a long white button-down as a lab coat and make a replica of Abby’s badge to clip on it.
4. Secret Agent/Spy
Just wear anything you would normally wear. If some one asks where your costume is, tell them that your are uncover trying to infiltrate the company. You would give them more details, but then you would have to kill them.
